Four-Legged Handmade Stool | Traditional Joinery
Four-Legged Handmade Stool | Traditional Joinery
A handcrafted four-legged stool built using traditional staked construction and hand-tool methods. Four legs and a full set of stretchers give it a planted, stable feel suited for everyday use in the kitchen, workshop, or entryway. The seat is hand-shaped for comfort, and the tapered mortise-and-tenon joinery requires no metal fasteners. Built to be used, repaired, and passed on.

Dimensions & Materials
Dimensions & Materials
Typical Dimensions (subject to change based on wood availability)
- Height: 17–19 in
- Seat Diameter: 11–13 in (round)
- Legs are angled outward at 12–14° for stability and traditional proportion.
Because each stool is built individually using traditional hand-tool methods, the specific species used for the seat and legs may vary depending on availability, structural requirements, and seasonal lumber stock.
Typical Materials
- Legs: Oak, Ash, Maple, or Hickory
These species are chosen for their exceptional strength, resilience, and ability to hold tapered mortise-and-tenon joinery. - Seats: Basswood, White Pine, or Cedar
These woods carve beautifully, allow subtle seat shaping, and keep the stool lightweight and comfortable to carry.
At times, other domestic hardwoods or softwoods may be used depending on availability and performance. Each stool will note the wood species used, and variations in color or grain are a natural feature of handcrafted furniture.
Finishing Options
Each stool is finished by hand using traditional, non-film finishes that age gracefully and highlight the character of the wood.
Soft Wax Finish
A simple blend of natural oils and waxes that produces a matte, tactile surface.
Easy to refresh over time and ideal for customers who want a natural, understated finish.
Milk Paint + Soft Wax
A traditional finish with rich, historic color tones. After painting, the stool is sealed with soft wax to create a warm, velvety sheen.
Milk paint develops depth and patina with use, giving the stool an honest, lived-in character.
Available by request.
Linseed Oil Paint + Soft Wax
A fully natural, highly durable paint made from polymerized linseed oil. Offers deeper color saturation than milk paint and builds a breathable, long-lasting finish.
Soft wax is applied as a final coat to protect the surface and enhance feel.
Blue currently available, other colors by request.
